Artificial Inteligence, Consciousness and Ethics: A Buddhist Perspective

  • Sakya Buddhist Center, Los Angeles 220 Pier Avenue Santa Monica, CA, 90405 United States (map)

Join us for a thought-provoking morning talk at Dechen LA exploring one of the most urgent and fascinating topics of our time: the rise of Artificial Intelligence. As AI rapidly reshapes every aspect of our lives—often for great benefit, yet sometimes with troubling consequences—we will examine its impact through the lens of Buddhist philosophy and ethics.

Together, we will consider questions at the heart of today’s technological revolution: Could AI ever be sentient? What is consciousness? How do we discern its nature? We will also look at the profound ethical challenges emerging from AI’s influence on society, identity, and human relationships.

A central theme of the session will be what AI means for each of us personally—how we choose to live, act, and cultivate wisdom in a world transformed by intelligent machines. Drawing on the ancient insights of Buddhism, we will reflect on how to navigate these changes with clarity, compassion, and responsibility.

There will be ample time for discussion, and as part of our ongoing series, we will introduce our monthly practical spiritual challenge to help deepen our practice and keep us accountable throughout the year.

All are welcome to this timely and engaging exploration.
