Buddhism versus Stoicism: similarities and differences in their guidance for life

  • Sakya Buddhist Center, Los Angeles 220 Pier Avenue Santa Monica, CA, 90405 United States (map)

Join Paul Haddon as he explores Buddhism and Stoicism—two timeless paths for meeting life’s challenges. With 30 years of Buddhist training and a background in Ancient Greek philosophy, Paul brings a unique East–West perspective.

Both Buddhism and Stoicism have stood the test of time, offering clear and practical advice for how to live well amidst the ups and downs of life. From the Stoics, we inherit an emphasis on resilience, virtue, and meeting difficulties with equanimity. From Buddhism, we receive not only these insights but a more expansive vision—compassion for all beings, the cultivation of wisdom through meditation, and ultimately the possibility of complete freedom from suffering.

In this talk, Paul will explore the parallels between these two great traditions, while also highlighting how the Buddhist path goes further: not simply teaching us how to endure life’s challenges, but how to transform them and transcend them altogether.

The event will be lively, friendly, and accessible, weaving together philosophy, practical guidance, and profound insights. Whether you are curious about Stoicism, interested in Buddhism, or simply seeking wise and compassionate ways to live, this talk will offer something of real value.

Afterwards, stay for a chat and the chance to meet others who share your interest in living with greater clarity, kindness, and purpose.
